  Approach
Area behind the foul line upon which the bowler takes steps,or the way a person gets from the starting spot to the foul line, that is a four-step.
 
   
  Foul -Line
Line separating the approach from the lane.
Bowler must stay behind line for pinfall to count.
 
   
  Lane
The 60-foot area between the foul line and the headpin.
 
   
  Channel / Gutter
Drop-off area on both sides of the lane.
 
   
  Target
The spot on the lane you aim for.
 
   
  Pocket
The place in a rack of pins to aim for to get a strike.
Between the one and three pins for a right-hander and
one and two pins for a left-hander.
 
   
  Strike
When all ten pins are knocked down when you roll your first ball.
 
   
  Spare
Some pins are left after the 1st roll, but all are knocked down on by the 2nd ball.
 
   
  Open Frame
A frame in which there is no Strike or Spare.
 
   
  Mark
A Strike or a Spare
 
   
  Split
Two or more pins remain standing after the 1st ball has been delivered.
The headpin and at least one pin between the standing pins are down.
 
   
  Frame
Part of the game when the bowler has up to two rolls of the ball to knock
down all the pins.
 
   
  Game
A game is complete when ten frames have been rolled.
 
   
  Bumpers
Gutter Free Bowling. A devise that keeps the ball on the lane.
